ABSTRACT

In Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning The Narrow Road to the Deep North, the central character is a World War II army surgeon who survives the death camps along the Thai-Burma railway. Later in life, Dorrigo Evans is disturbed by the ‘bland new world’ around him, especially ‘the new age of conformity that was coming in all things, even emotions’ (Flanagan 2013: 80).
