ABSTRACT

This book has investigated the intersection between the themes of battlefield commemorative events, warscapes, heritage-related travel and tourism and memory. In doing so the contributors have explored a number of sites and themes that highlight the enduring appeal of key battlefield events and also the continued resonance of these commemorative events to the wider community well into the present day. Indeed, for many attending, a commemorative event such as Anzac Day in Darwin, a peace memorial at Ieper or a World War II-era Solomon Islands war service monument is their first and most intense direct engagement with battlefield events and more broadly the memory of war.
