ABSTRACT

Hypnobirth focus on the normality of birth, but can rehearse different scenarios in order to consider which techniques might be most appropriate. Hypnobirth encourages a couple to practise scripts, relaxation and deepening techniques. Early intervention, in the form of antenatal education, directly affects a child's immediate and long-term health, emotional development, socialisation, relationships and educational achievements. A total of 20 men took part in a 2007 Swedish study examining men's fear surrounding childbirth. Antenatal education cannot provide enough time to fully explore the changing relationships, nor was it designed to do so. The relationship between the hypnobirth facilitator and the class is an important one. The group need to feel confident in the ability of the teacher. Hypnobirth has historically been seen as 'alternative' and provided by private practitioners. The birth philosophy can be misaligned with the National Health Service (NHS) medical model. Bringing hypnobirth into the NHS has diluted much of the 'fight'.
