ABSTRACT

InpreparationfortheMallorcaconferencewedevelopedaframeworkfor examiningtheapproachesusedbysocialpsychologistsintheapplicationof theirdisciplinetosocialproblems.Weassumedthattheiractivitiesinthis regardmightbeusefullythoughtofasaformofsocialintervention.The framework,presentedinTablel,islimitedtoconsideringtwodimensionsof socialintervention:itsformandthetypeofrelationshipthatexistsbetweena socialpsychologistandaclientsystem.Admittedly,thismodelisincomplete, ignoringsuchrelevantdimensionsasthetypeoforganizationatwhichthe interventionisbeingaimed,e.g.,government,industrial,educational,the organization'ssize,anditspredominanttechnology.Theframeworkalso neglectsconsiderationofwhethertheorganization'sexistingproblemsare locatedwithinitsspanofcontrol,e.g.,needsofcustomersanddemandsof employees,orwhethertheylieoutside,e.g.,legislativeregulationsand pressuregroupactivities.Andthereisnoattentiontopotentialdifferencesin professionalrole,suchasinternal(i.e.,amemberoftheorganization)or external(i.e.,anoutsideparty)agentofchange.Alloftheseareconditions whichinfluenceboththewaysocialpsychologistsworkinappliedsettingsand thelikelihoodthattheirworkwillhaveanyimpact.Althoughabsentfromthe framework,thesemattersarenotneglectedinthischapter,andtheywillbe discussedinrelationtootherissues.
