Key messages • The population of the Volta Basin is projected to increase from 23.8 million in 2010 to
56.1 million in 2050, with children and young people under 34 years of age constituting about 70 per cent of the total population. Between 2013 and 2030, urban population is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 2.8-4.9 per cent. These demographic trends will have huge implications for the future development of the basin.
