ABSTRACT

Key messages • Surface water resources in the Volta Basin are highly dependent on the climate and therefore

highly variable, both spatially and temporally. Available Volta Basin water resources in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire are below the threshold for water scarcity of 1,700m3/cap/a and are therefore considered water scarce, while Ghana, Benin and Togo have excess and insufficient data are available for Mali. Variations within countries exist, with the northern parts of Ghana facing water scarcity, while the south has sufficient water available. Due to

population growth, the Volta Basin on average is expected to be below the threshold for water scarcity by 2030.
