ABSTRACT

Key messages • Groundwater plays an invaluable role in water supply to rural areas, small towns and urban

centres in the Volta Basin. As of 2001, about 44 per cent of the population depended on groundwater sources for domestic water supply. This figure was significantly higher (60 per cent) in rural areas, where groundwater is not only for domestic use but also

for other productive uses, such as small-scale irrigated agriculture, livestock watering and brick making, all of which contribute to poverty reduction.
