ABSTRACT

The institutions have developed, with considerable investment, globally significant knowledge activities, including the National Building Specification and the Building Cost Information Service; both profitably owned and run by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors respectively. The response of the institutions to recent challenges and the diversity of practice in the industry has been to become more service-orientated and intent on providing a popular product and experience for their membership. Recruiting and providing services is much easier at home and expansion there too has not been neglected with offers of institutional affiliation being made to a wider and wider range of people. On joining members will be agreeing to abide by the Code of Conduct of their institution. For several disciplines this is effectively a double code. Engineers are subject to the code of the Engineering Council as well as their home institution.
