ABSTRACT

John Dent started his career at Trident Studios, working under Ray Staff (also in this book) and Howard Thompson, but quickly developed his own client base and growing reputation with the punk scene in London at the time. His list of clients from the era is a who’s who of the music industry, including The Police, The Stranglers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and Ultravox, to name but a few. John moved from Trident in 1978 and set up The Sound Clinic with Island records and worked with the likes of U2, Bob Marley once more, Fairport Convention, and Peter Gabriel, amongst many others. Later in 1987, alongside Graeme Durham, he started The Exchange in Camden, continuing work with Island and remastering for CD. John then moved to set up LOUD mastering in 1995, where many records were cut for various artists, and shared his knowledge with his business partner Jason Mitchell, joining in 1997. Russ had interviewed John on a few occasions over the decades, and this latest interview was carried out for this book. The news that John had passed away came through just after Christmas in 2017. As you will read in the pages that follow this, his interview shows he was passionate about mastering and high-quality sound throughout his career.
