ABSTRACT

Urban villages are pervasive in the entire Pearl River Delta region. It is also a heated topic recently, around which there are a variety of stories told in town. The Pearl River Delta has witnessed a dizzying pace of industrialization and urbanization in the past 20 years. The "urban villages" in the big cities are like relics of ancient history, but also like the newborn in the process of rapid urbanization. How to handle and use case study and interview materials – the so-called qualitative research method in sociology – is always a puzzling problem. In this respect, there are two methods to process the raw materials seen in the past studies on Chinese village: text summarization by Fei Xiaotong and literary summarization by Lin Yueh-Hwa. The end of the village is not necessarily identical to the end of farmers, which cannot be solved by nonagriculturalization, industrialization, or reforming the household registration system.
