ABSTRACT

In the Western world, scholars commonly attribute the foundation of sociology discipline to French Auguste Comte because he coined the term "sociology", a combination of Latin and Greek, in order to distinguish from the concept of "socio-physics", a concept that Comte believed had been pirated by social statisticians. Tao Menghe, on the other hand, was first to study sociology overseas and first to write a sociological monograph based on sociological analysis of Chinese society. The academic system set around sociology, along with the school system, the postal service system, and railroad network, is part of galaxy of "institutional symbols" for modernization through which scholars are able to decode and preserve the "texts" for modernization process. China's modernization is a long transformation process of its social structure, and institutional transformation is part of its component. In modernization process, the base structural changes of everyday life are the longest, deepest, and most extensive, frequent, and fundamental changes that attract least attention.
