ABSTRACT

The values-based approach has allowed for a broad distribution of leadership at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) across its global network. When managers are asked about all possible characteristics of leadership, the various elements of integrity are often ranked the highest, and frequently higher than competence itself. Moral management is a common term used to describe the leadership function of ensuring effective corporate governance by framing, communicating, enforcing, and adapting organizational expectations. Self-awareness and self-regulation sets authentic leadership apart from other values-based approaches to leadership, especially from moral management. The spiritual leadership as a school of thought only emerged in 2003, but it has precedents in the servant leadership tradition and in Kohlbergian ethics. Systems with ethical leadership provide a higher quality of life for all individuals involved, higher organizational performance on average, and greater sustainability over time. The performance variables for all these values-based leadership are dissimilar to other approaches that emphasize efficiency of production or follower satisfaction.
