ABSTRACT

In Part III, we examined competency-and roles-based approaches to leadership practice. In Part IV, with this chapter, we shift our focus to responsibility-based approaches to leadership practice. These approaches are concerned with the use of appropriate frameworks to guide responsible action from personal, organizational, and cultural perspectives. Values-based approaches provide personal perspectives and are the topic of this chapter. They range from the internally focused perspective on integrity, to how individual leaders should ethically shape the change process. Broader cultural perspectives are the subject of the next chapter, in which ethics is not just situated in individuals, but in entire organizations and societies. Needless to say, the personal, cultural, and organizational perspectives are synergistic, as the above example illustrates. Without responsible individuals, it is impossible to have responsible organizations and societies. Likewise, without responsible organizations, responsible individuals may not be the most effective.
