ABSTRACT

This article provides a broad overview of the history of the Syriac Bible and its interpretation from the first to fifteenth centuries. While necessarily limited in particulars, it provides a basic introduction to the major biblical versions as well as the principal biblical interpreters of the Syriac heritage. In this survey, both East and West Syrian traditions are discussed, including the various genres and methods of exposition that made the Bible and its interpretation of such significance to the Syriac world.
