ABSTRACT

Feminist activism is nothing new in Lebanon. Lebanese women have been struggling for many years, as have women all over the world. Indeed, facts demolish one of the most widespread myths, that Lebanese women are the most liberated in the Arab world. Fe-Male's most prominent initiative is the first feminist radio program in Lebanon and the Middle East, Sharika wa Laken which aims to raise awareness of women's rights in Lebanese society by airing interviews with pioneering figures campaigning for gender equality. Women's rights and women's issues cannot be dissociated from an understanding and practice of inclusive democracy. When the powers that be support or simply ignore extremist practices, occupation, injustice, armed conflict, dictators, invasion, and the use of violence, they act directly in support of gender inequality. There is no place for double standards in a real democracy.
