ABSTRACT

This is the chapter in which a trumpet fanfare announces a more detailed discussion of CIs. At one level, most people have a reasonable idea what a CI tells us, as we discussed in Chapter 1. However, at a deeper level CIs are tricky and it’s fascinating as well as important to try to understand them well. In this chapter I discuss four ways to think about and interpret CIs. Here’s the agenda:

■ Errors of estimation and MoE ■ Trumpets for CIs, and the dance of the CIs ■ The t distribution ■ An interlude on randomness ■ Effect sizes ■ Four ways to think about and interpret CIs

These are all ideas at the heart of estimation, and, therefore, at the heart of this book. We’ll see more dancing and, as usual, pictures and simulations will help us develop good statistical intuitions.
