ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ethical lapses of sports organizations themselves, for example, covering up sexual abuse, bribing, denying drug use, protecting one's sport, exaggerating, cheating and the like. There are a number of shows that deal with sports, not too many considering how popular live sporting events are. Sports on television have somewhat of a losing record. Fighting used to be more integral to the adrenaline rush of a full-contact sport played at high speeds. If one looks at the weekly television ratings, sports are nearly always at the top of broadcast or cable rankings. Sports and sports violations are everywhere. For example, the Russians are accused of cheating at sports. As a result of cheating, they might be banned from participating in the international track meets. No longer are sports statistics the domain of sports geeks; nearly everyone can rattle off a given player's statistics.
