ABSTRACT
The work of medieval Islamic philosophers builds upon the theories and findings of Ancient Greek and Hellenistic philosophy, primarily the Aristotelian and the Neoplatonic traditions, but this commonly shared heritage alone would not account for the diversity of interests nor the originality of medieval Islamic philosophy, which in drawing on the past philosophical tradition seeks to clarify and solve contemporary theological and religious as well as philosophical problems.
