ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in preceding chapters of this book. The book introduces practices of curriculum, guidance and assessment in Japan by looking on their post-war history. It explains four perspectives to analyse the status of academic ability, as well as the idea of lesson study. The book summarises the historical efforts to improve lesson study as well as practices that go beyond lesson study. It focuses on four excellent educators who sought a link between life and education as well as between science and education. The book examines teacher's competency in organising a lesson as drama by considering that there is a tradition to pursue lessons that are hammered out by pooling each individual's ideas. It also examines the improvement of practice centred on assessment. The book also explains cases of practices that utilised portfolio assessment in the Period for Integrated Study (PFIS).
