ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focus on conceptualizing the term collective and national trauma by describing the types of traumatic events; and proposes a theoretical framework and specific techniques for psychosocial or mental health interventions that consider both the special characteristics of collective and national trauma and the system as a unit. It describes the impact of the help on the mental health helpers, and suggests systemic principles that can prevent possible negative impacts and to heal the effects if they occur. It also deals with the reasons for the lack of evidence-based systemic practices relevant to situations of collective and national trauma. Then, it also exposes the social, cultural and national elements to be considered in understanding the impact of national trauma and working with its victims.
