ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the definition and analysis of collective and national trauma. It discusses the effect of collective and national trauma on culture, society, community, families and individuals. It also focuses on the impact of collective trauma on society and nations through a cultural perspective and social perspectives. The impact of collective trauma is analyzed through the lens of societies within specific nations. By societies within nations, author refers to people living in a particular country with shared customs, laws and organizations. The functional community refers to a specific group of people, who shares a common identity, problem, goal, or interest. Among the functional communities is the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and communities based on religion, ethnicity, race, or specific health situations. The chapter focuses on possible specific outcomes of collective and national trauma and their impact on the families and their members.
