ABSTRACT

Philosophy in its ultimate essence is one and the same, every succeeding philosopher must take up into his own, and what falls specially to him is their further development. Hegel's use of religious terms in his philosophy, notions of the world spirit and the absolute idea have led many commentators to compare him with Plato. In a passage on Plato, Hegel exposes the dynamic element behind his and Marx's notion of revolutionising practice. According to Hegel, the greatest achievement of Plato's philosophy is its recognition of the intellectual and social world of men and women. Hegel argues that Christianity has made the intelligible world of philosophy the world of common consciousness. Right-wing Hegelians felt that Hegel's philosophy justified Christianity while the Young Hegelians of the left argued that Hegel opposed religion. Hegel's clearly states that the accusation of atheism and pantheism concern pictorial conceptions only which are dealt with on the exoteric level to keep the Philistines happy.
