ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on attitudes to smoking, on why people smoke and the costs and effects of smoking. Children are encouraged to design a questionnaire and to carry out an investigation into people's views on smoking and there are activities on the laws about smoking and on electronic cigarettes. The chapter discusses attitudes to smoking, ways of saying 'no' when offered a cigarette and explores the reasons why people start to smoke. It helps to understand the risks and the costs of smoking. Up-to-date facts and statistics about the risks and costs of smoking can be found at the Action on Smoking and Health website. It explains that over 100,000 people a year in the UK die from smoking-related illnesses and that a person who smokes is likely to die six to nine years earlier than a non-smoker. The chapter investigates smoking habits and attitudes towards smoking and issues concerning e-cigarettes.
