ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on exploring the neighbourhoods in which the children live. There is the opportunity for them to discuss the places they can play, to survey the condition of the neighbourhood and how safe it is and to present plans for a new playground. There is also an activity on vandals and vandalism. The chapter surveys the appearance and condition of the neighbourhood and how safe it is by asking the children in groups to carry out a survey of their neighbourhood to establish how safe it is and what its appearance is like. It shows places where children play and design a new play area by asking the children to imagine that the local council is planning to build a new play area in a local park or an area of waste ground. By running a competition for children in which they have to design the new play area. The chapter explores the problem of vandalism.
