ABSTRACT

This chapter explains what is meant by stereotyping, focusing on issues of gender stereotyping, prejudice and racism and ageism. There are also activities about attitudes towards immigrants. The chapter presents similarities and differences between people. It illustrates that one cannot judge what people are like by their physical appearance. The game is to demonstrate that it is impossible to base one's image of people on their physical characteristics, appearance, dress or some other factor, such as their date of birth. The chapter discusses how one can judge what people are like and considers how people are stereotyped. It explores some attitudes towards older people. The chapter shows that there are no such things as men's jobs and women's jobs. It identifies examples of negative stereotyping. Explain that newspaper headlines and news reports can stereotype people by the language they use.
