ABSTRACT

Autoethnography is a relatively recent extension in the anthropological field of ethnography. In this chapter, we will first reflect on the roots of the method, explore definitions and their origins and illustrate key features and elements to familiarise the reader with the history and nuances of autoethnography. As well, we will develop an understanding of the ways this method has been used in general professional settings as well as specifically in youth sport and physical education. Finally, the chapter posits how autoethnography may be further used in our field to challenge norms, disrupt discourse and, ultimately, educate.
