ABSTRACT
About one hundred years ago, San Francisco’s leaders celebrated their city’s achievements. Not only had it recovered from the devastating 1906 earthquake, it sat on the cusp of a future American empire. As the shining culmination of European and Anglo American expansion across the continent, the city now positioned itself to lead America’s push into Pacific markets. Completion of the Panama Canal only underscored the city’s bright future. So, it hosted the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition, a world’s fair perched on the peninsula overlooking the Golden Gate.
