chapter  4
Dimensions of cross-societal cultural differences
Pages 28

To complement our general discussion of globalization and, more specifically, to augment the presentation of the economic dimension introduced in Chapter 3, in this chapter we discuss the construction of four composite measures of cultural differences (i.e., cultural distance), present their component dimensions, and introduce a number of variables that serve as proxies for cultural differences. It is these measures that we employ in later chapters to represent cultural differences when undertaking our econometric analysis. We also consider general differences in the extent to which countries are globalized across country cohorts, defined based on the countries’ relative cultural (dis)similarities. In doing so, we bridge the topics of globalization and cultural differences and provide a foundation for the analysis that is presented in later chapters.
