ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of research and programming related to three different marginalized populations. The first population is female youth from families living on low incomes in Canada. The second population is Aboriginal youth in Canada. The third population is youth from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). In addition to the overview of research and programming with these three populations, the chapter also provides an in-depth case example of a life skills program involved in developing, implementing, or evaluating with these three marginalized populations. The chapter concludes with an outline of future directions for sport and physical activity programs with marginalized youth. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun program (GJWHF) program was developed in response to an identified gap in programming for female youth at a local Boys and Girls Club. Annual reports from the local club indicated that only 19 percent of participants in sport and recreation programs were female.
