ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews concepts related to positive growth, review recent research that has been conducted among athletes and in youth sport settings, provides suggestions for future research. It shows some of the ethical implications for research on positive growth following adversity. The study of positive growth emerged within the field of psychology amid a larger wave of research emphasizing positive functioning and human development. In some ways, the development of positive growth as a domain of inquiry has mirrored the emergence of positive youth development (PYD) as a field of research in the early 1990s and 2000s. Post traumatic growth (PTG) is one of the most commonly used terms when it comes to understanding the positive changes that people report following traumatic events. And it refers to "positive psychological change experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances".
