ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two components of ethics in the context of computing and Information Communication Technology (ICT) in schools. First, it looks at ethical issues that directly affect the use of technologies in school with learners. Second, it considers wider ethical issues which learners may learn about and discuss but which do not directly impinge on them. The chapter considers ethical issues in the use of technology that directly affect teachers of computing and ICT and their learners. Teachers also reported that the training was inadequate and involved crude stereotyping. This highlights the need for appropriate, professional development that enables teachers to sensitively develop tomorrow's digital citizens. The chapter looks at a very wide range of ethical and privacy issues. Ethics and e-safety are not just things to have policies about: they are objects of learning in their own right.
