ABSTRACT
It seemed like an innocent enough idea. Your students are reading self-selected texts. Some have picked up classics from the literary canon-The Sound and the Fury, Jane Eyre, and Great Expectations, for example. Others have pulled from more contemporary adult fiction, sifting through titles such as Beloved, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, or The House on Mango Street. Still others have immersed in the wealth of young adult fiction: The Hunger Games, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Giver, and The Lightning Thief being prominent selections.
