ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 considers why coaches do what they do and the consequences of their actions. To do this, the chapter begins by drawing upon Self-Determination Theory as a framework in which coaches’ motivation and its causes and consequences can be viewed. Following this discussion, Achievement Goal Theory is introduced to explain how the environment or climate that is organised and structured by the coach can influence the goals that are adopted by athletes/players. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the coach–athlete/player relationship.
