The rational passion for consistency itself is also an important positive type of motivation. The complexity of the content of the moral life which is to form the basis for any rational morality that appeals to principles. The converse sin of the progressive was to imagine that children go it alone without any proper grasp of content or of the underlying mode of experience with its immanent principles. The stress on the importance of principles in morality implies rigidity in the moral life. The complexity of people moral life is to rid their straightaway of any simple-minded view that moral education is just a matter of getting children to have 'good personal relationships' or to observe interpersonal rules like those relating to sex, stealing and selfishness. The conception of moral education is indistinguishable from the ideal of a liberal education.
