ABSTRACT

Over the last century increased affluence for some socio-economic groups in the UK and Europe has meant an increase in travel both at home and internationally with the resulting boom in the holiday industry (Alleyne 1991; Youell 1994). As working hours have shortened, so leisure time has increased. This has resulted in behaviour change related to leisure and how people choose to spend their free time. This chapter will consider the important health issues involved in encouraging safe leisure time in the sun both within the UK and abroad. Emphasis is placed on outbound travel from the UK, domestic and international tourism as a context for encouraging safe leisure time in the sun.
