ABSTRACT

A city can be thought as a work of art, a poem or a painting. The ultimate achievement of the built environment should be to create an aesthetic feeling (yijing ᛣ๗) – a conception deeply rooted in ancient Chinese culture – as in the aesthetic feeling of the city. Importantly, the word ‘feeling’ evokes here the fluid interdependence between perceiving subject and perceived object. The feeling of a city can evoke the mood of the city as much as the feeling of the perceiving subject. Yijing therefore refers to the aesthetic feeling of some-thing. Key elements that create the yijing of city spaces are cultural dimensions, urban structures and the individual character of cities (chengshi gexing ජᏖןᗻ).
