ABSTRACT

American higher education institutions have wide orbits, in the locality and well beyond, that can relate strongly to basic priorities. The broad reach that results may enhance funding opportunities and educational quality, including student success. Figuring out how to address regional and even global opportunities and pressures has significant implications for administration, faculty and students alike. More than with regional outreach, different institutions face widely varied global challenges and opportunities. Most institutions take pride in extending their educational mission beyond the formal student body, and they often serve as anchors for economic development and cultural life. Regional and global activities must ultimately be evaluated in terms of the basic priorities of contemporary American higher education. Internships and volunteer operations that flow from a solid regional base feed student success directly. Regional and global horizons provide part of the excitement of contemporary higher education.
