ABSTRACT
During this phase of his life, Marx moved through school and two universities to emerge with a doctoral degree. Then, finding himself with no academic position available, he moved into journalism. The period concludes with the frustration of government censorship of the press driving him into the solitude of his study, a solitude he was to experience over much of the rest of his life.
