ABSTRACT

This chapter consolidates the key themes, findings and contributions of the book. Strengths and differences within and between the two fields are observed. A number of the findings centre on rehabilitation work and the impact of structural and sectoral issues on the helping professions. In considering the major challenges in doing rehabilitation work, people in processes of desistance and recovery are not the central point of concern, which contrasts with the extensive literature and public discourses on the risks that they pose and the problematisation of the rates at which they 'fail' to be rehabilitated. The chapter also discusses the implications of moving towards more recovery and desistance-oriented rehabilitation cultures and practices. Sustainable and context-sensitive resolutions will emanate from further development of the interface between theoretical, empirical and experiential knowledge of rehabilitation and the important work of the helping professions in supporting it.
