ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present an overview of the Canadian sport system, to provide context to our ensuing discussion, as well as an overview of public policy associated with elite youth sport in Canada. We then discuss the impacts and influences of the elite youth sport system and public policy on three sports: figure skating, ice hockey and soccer/football. Finally, we provide a critical analysis of elite youth sport in Canada and conclude with two avenues for the future of the elite youth sport in Canada.
