ABSTRACT

The policies in elite youth sport were developed and implemented by the authoritarian governments of the 1960s and for many subsequent decades in South Korea (hereafter Korea), the focus was firmly on winning medals in sports mega-events such as the Olympics and Asian Games. It was taken for granted that athletes should conform to excessive training as instructed by their coaches, concentrate on training regimes and participate in competitions and be absent from school in order for them to achieve a meaningful outcome.
