ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Story Discovery Engine model for reporting. It explains what the Story Discovery Engine model is and offers an overview of the fields that the Story Discovery Engine draws on: artificial intelligence theory, cognition, and media management. The chapter discusses how the author develops a prototype for the system and deployed it for reporting, and what the impact was of that reporting. Improved deliberative creativity will help a reporter create more ideas, which creates more sellable commodities for the media organization. The Story Discovery Engine diverges from Lopez-Ortega's system in its intent: unlike in Lopez-Ortega's model, the goal is not to get the computer to create original, creative ideas. This is computer-mediated communication in the sense that D. Chandler and R. Munday define, meaning that the user engages in a type of human–computer dialogue. The difference between an original investigative story and a routine story has to do with ideas about the role of journalism in democracy.
