ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book highlights three major areas of interest namely: Marx's search for a sound epistemology or foundation on which to build a social theory; the way in which Marx continually modifies the concepts, theoretical building blocks or bricks, he uses in putting up the structure, and the different functions they are given in holding it together. It focuses on the theoretical content of Marx's thought is different at various stages of his writing, is maintained by keeping the question of theory as opposed to that of concept at the forefront of discussion. The concept of alienation is most suitable in demonstrating that despite the various refinements and developments it undergoes in Marx's thought it can be found in his writings from the critique of Hegel's philosophy of right through to Capital.
