ABSTRACT

People have been skiing for centuries. Early on skiing was used by the people who lived in the mountains for the sole purpose of traversing the mountainous terrain of Norway. However, skiing was quickly adapted into an activity that could see competitions. The sport quickly expanded throughout the world around the late 1880s. Throughout history, skiing has seen its own modifications, due in part to different nations having different terrains that required a different skill set. In America, skiers flock to the Rocky Mountain range during winter months, while year-round in Europe skiers travel to the Alps for ski vacations. In this chapter, we will discuss the history of skiing as a recreational activity and as a sport, we will also discuss the popularity of skiing and where skiers go around the world for their ski trips. Lastly, we will be discussing some of the key figures who helped skiing become popular around the world.
