Brookview House in Boston is specifically designed to meet the needs of homeless single mothers and children, both through a social program and its physical design. It attempts to create an internal community that encourages interaction and mutual support while respecting privacy in a noninstitutional building. The house includes eight complete apartments, common space for the residents, a playroom, a counseling room, and an office. The site is very visible in an urban neighborhood in transition. The siteplan and exterior integrate the house with the neighborhood, and it is an anchor for future redevelopment.
