ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts an iconographic exegesis patterned after de Hulster. The chapter focuses on: choice of theme, a separate analysis of textual evidence from the Hebrew Bible, an independent study of iconographic evidence from Israel/Palestine, a broader analysis of textual and iconographic evidence from the Ancient Near East and interrelation of the several, independent conclusions of the foregoing analysis. In this broader context, it propose interpreting the Exodus-formulae as an example of the code of movement, since they both share the same lexicon and ideology: the Pharaoh leading defeated enemies would be at the base of the return journey, with YHWH leading his people out of Egypt. The code of movement allows another level of analysis. The chapter closes with historical conclusions, illustrating the ideological network which existed in the East Mediterranean region during the Late Bronze and Iron Ages.
