ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the roles of technology and culture in the business success of Lee Kum Kee, a well-known oyster sauce manufacturer in Hong Kong. It has been a Chinese family business in the sauce industry for 125 years. Mr. Lee Kum-sheung invented oyster sauce and established the Lee Kum Kee Oyster Oil Workshop in Nanshui, Guangdong, China in 1888. After Lee Shiu-tang, the second son of Senior Lee, expanded oyster sauce production to Hong Kong in 1932, Lee Kum Kee became a renowned Chinese family enterprise. During the 1970s, Lee Man-tat, the eldest son of Lee Shiu-tang, took over the company. In the 1980s, the fourth generation of the Lees joined the company after graduating from universities in the United States. This chapter concludes that Lee Kum Kee has been able to assimilate the best of Chinese and foreign cultures in order to compete in the global market.
