ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on identifying promising practices with diverse students in career centers and intervention strategies for improving the reach of career services. Career centers can establish relationships with local workforce recruitment programs to provide opportunities for students with disabilities to "prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs". A variety of external forces are causing higher education career services offices to re-evaluate their roles and missions. The chapter highlights the process of program planning where a broad array of options are considered and decisions are made to identify options that have the best likelihood of successful implementation in order to address gaps in services. It describes some program intervention strategies that include outreach to diverse students and examples of evidence-based practice. Research has documented the positive impact of computer-based guidance systems on career decision-making, but knowledge is lacking on how technology and social media have improved employment outcomes.
