ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about Indian Military transformation into a major force in the world at the twenty-first century. The Indian military today is the world's fourth largest after the US, Russian and Chinese militaries. The Indian Army (IA) is a 1 million plus volunteer force that is well trained, disciplined and equipped with modern armaments. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has acquired the capacity to project power within and beyond India's immediate neighbourhood and is capable of playing both offensive and defensive roles. The Indian Navy (IN) has been transformed into a blue water-capable navy with the acquisition and development of aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines and various other naval assets; it is also constructing new and refurbishing existing bases. To speed up the Indian military's development and modernisation drive, the Indian government paid attention to expanding defence relations with a large number of countries. 'Military transformation' means something more than simply a 'revolution in military affairs'.
