ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors examine the implementation and outcomes of a super global high school (SGH) programme focused on sustainability in a public high school in Shiga, Japan. The Moriyama Project – to Realise a Sustainable Society – encourages students to consider, discuss, research and propose ways to mainstream sustainability throughout the high school environment. Teachers from Moriyama High School reported that people living in Shiga prefecture tended to have a strong love of nature and desire to protect the environment. Schools and teachers were given great flexibility to determine the hours, subjects and content of learning activities based on students' interests and local characteristics. The pre- and post-programme surveys can assess how students' awareness and behaviour change after joining the SGH programme. However, to better understand the underlying reasons for change, focus group discussions (FGD) are helpful. FDGs enable collective discussion of focused topics and permit greater flexibility in discussion than surveys, generating more extensive comments.
